The following Letter to the Editor appeared in the Las Vegas Review-Journal, June 17, 1997.

To the Editor:

On June 4, the Clark County Planning Commission voted to allow more than 500 RV units, a clubhouse, a convenience store, gasoline pumps, and a car wash at the mouth of the Red Rock Canyon. The planning staff of Clark County and the Red Rock Citizens Advisory Council had recommended that the project be denied since it does not fit the land use plan or the zoning for the area. What is going on here?

In changing the land use and zoning from rural and light commercial, the developer will make a great deal of money. As an added "benefit," the developer indicated that the Bureau of Land Management has agreed to give land to the project for a campground. Of course, there are no water or sewer facilities in the area, so the rest of us will get to pay for infrastructure.

It's an interesting battle, and it's not over. On July 2, the Clark County Commission will meet for a final decision on the matter. To save the canyon from assault, the commissioners need to hear fromus, and the message should be clear: It's time to quit playing games with land-use agreements, with zoning, with local advisory groups, and with reality, We do not need or benefit from 500 RVs at the mouth of Red Rock Canyon.
