August 8, 2002 Erin Kenny Commissioner Kenny: I am writing with grave concern in regards to the proposed development on the Blue Diamond Hill. Laing Homes is proposing 5400 homes, 21,000 people, a four-lane highway. Rampant development is eating up the desert on all sides of the Las Vegas Valley. The air is polluted; the water supply challenged; the eco-system invaded. Must we sacrifice our most scenic natural places to developers? To allow big investors and corporations to benefit at the expense of taxpayers who are currently enjoying this area of unsurpassed geological formations, scenic beauty, and recreational access would be a crime. I would not want such a legacy on my conscience nor on my political record. While the proposed development does not lie within the of the Red Rock Conservancy Area, it will border the Conservancy on three sides, while the fourth side is nondisposable BLM land. The development would definitely lie within what is topographically Red Rock Canyon. The traffic and visual impact that would result from this massive housing development in such close proximity to Red Rock would have a disastrous and un-redeemable impact aesthetically and environmentally on Red Rock Canyon. The Red Rock Conservancy Area is at present being pushed to its limits in regards to visitation numbers and traffic. Adding the congestion of 21,000 people at its borders is very poor planning indeed. One-half hour's drive from the city. Families having picnics, hikers, bikers, climbers, and tourists come to Red Rock expecting to escape the concrete urban jungle of stress, noise, traffic, and dirty air. They come for peacefulness, natural beauty, and restoration of the balance in their souls. You are quoted in the Las Vegas Sun, October 18, 2001, in an article regarding the proposed Overlay District Rules, intended to preserve the character of the gateway to Red Rock Canyon, as saying: "we take our special places seriously." I implore you to stand by your words. I trust that you will be a worthy caretaker of the public lands that have been entrusted to you as our County Commissioner. Sincerely, Sandra K. Finley |
