August 6, 2002 Dear Editor, We are in danger of losing a precious gem in the Las Vegas area. Do you like to drive out along State Rt. 159 in Red Rock Canyon to enjoy the fresh air and beautiful, clear vistas? Is Red Rock Canyon your escape from the energy of the city to enjoy hiking, biking, horseback riding, or just gazing? Well say goodbye to beautiful Red Rock Canyon. A developer, John Laing Homes, is proposing to build over 8,400 homes for an estimated 21,000 people - a city the size of Kingman, AZ or Boulder City on Blue Diamond Hill in Red Rock Canyon. This development, while not legally within the bounds of the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, is physically in Red Rock Canyon. Blue Diamond Hill is the ridge that forms the eastern wall of Red Rock Canyon and although it does not have the stunning beauty of the ridges that form the western Canyon wall, it's role is critical in visually shielding the Canyon from the urban Las Vegas valley. Red Rock Canyon will no longer be a place to get away from the city because the city will be there, traffic, stop lights, street lights, and all. So if you haven't seen beautiful Red Rock Canyon, do so now before the city moves in. The County Commissioners are scheduled to approve this plan on September 18. The destruction, oh I mean construction, is slated to begin in Spring 2003. Sincerely,
Nina Mata
